Mary, Untier of Knots 37 cm

This majolica depicts the so-called “Madonna of the knots” and is hand painted on ceramic.

The decoration is inspired by the painting by Johann Georg Melchior Schmidtner Mary Undoer of Knots (Virgen Maria Knotenlöserin), created by the German painter around 1700 and preserved in Augsburg. From this painting originated a great Marian devotion that continues to this day. Pope Francis himself has been deeply connected to Schmidtner’s work since he was young, when, during his theological studies in Germany, he was so struck by Mary Undoer of Knots that he worked to spread her cult in Argentina.
