Crucifix 21 cm Pavona

Hand-decorated majolica crucifix with a “peacock feather eye” design on a blue background.

In Christian tradition, the peacock is the symbol of the perfect, just, and holy man. Saint Augustine writes in his De Civitate Dei that the just man shines with virtue as the peacock shines with innumerable sparkles, and just as the peacock’s song scares away serpents, the just man scares away the devil with prayer. It is therefore no coincidence that in 15th-century paintings we see angels of the Annunciation with the “angelic feather,” or peacock feathers adorning the archangel’s wings.

Dimensions of the crucifix decorated in Pavona: 13 x 21 cm, thickness 1 cm.
